Connect2 Wins £50 Million Lottery Bid
Back to news

CWEA would like to thank everyone who voted for the Connect2 Peoples' Millions Lottery Bid submitted by Sustrans which was televised on ITV1 on 4th December 2007.

The Connect2 bid aims to revitalise walking and cycling in 79 communities across the UK by creating new routes for journeys made every day. Crossings and bridges will be created over busy roads, railway lines and rivers, linking into new networks of local paths to get you to where you want to go.

There are 3 projects in Cheshire and Warrington:

Riversdale Swing Bridge, Northwich & its connecting routes - one of the primary projects within the bid. This pedestrian bridge over the River Weaver was closed in 2004 by British Waterways due to safety issues. Previously it was used by up to 1000 walkers and cyclists every day to access local schools and colleges. The closure led to significant additional road traffic as the alternative route was on busy roads and added an average 2 miles to journeys. The project aims to reinstate this link with a new, iconic bridge which will serve as a vital connection but as a popular destination in its own right, linking with the Weaver Way.

Nantwich to Crewe link along the A530 corridor project to create a rural promenade between Crewe and Nantwich that are within easy cycling distance of each other but are separated by main roads. It will be set well back from the road and will connect with the riverside walks in Nantwich as well as Queen’s Park in Crewe.

Proposed new footbridge/cycleway over the River Dee in Chester connecting the South side of the city (Boughton) with the city centre.

Online voting opened on Monday 26th November at www.thepeoples50million.org.uk with telephone voting opening on Friday 7 December and running through to 12 noon on 10 December.

This was the biggest ever award to be decided by public vote.

The Sustrans' bid was up against three other bids:

The Edge proposal to evolve The Eden Project.

Sherwood : The Living Legend - project to protect the fragile ecology of this famous forest.

Black Country Urban Park - project to create an attractive, safe, urban environment for residents and visitors.
